In September 2020, EnCap volunteers assembled 250 COVID-19 safety kits and 240 school supply kits for donation to students at two local HISD elementary schools in the Third and Fifth Wards. The COVID-19 safety kits assembled included face masks, antibacterial gel, disinfectant wipes, and disposable gloves while the school supply kits assembled included tablet styluses, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, rulers, and binders. The donated COVID-19 safety kits were delivered to Ruby L. Thompson Elementary School, and the donated school supply kits were delivered to Matthew Dogan Elementary School in conjunction with 9/11 day, a National Day of Service.
The event was coordinated with assistance from Volunteer Houston and in coordination with Emancipation Park Conservancy and Momentum Education. Emancipation Park Conservancy was established to restore, manage, and enhance Emancipation Park, and their core program offerings support the areas of education, health, wellness, and economic empowerment throughout the Third Ward area. Houston-based Momentum Education’s vision is to create a movement to ensure every student can fulfill their dreams. Their mission is to provide in-school learning support, mentoring, summer internships, and scholarships to underserved students to get them to and through post-secondary education and into the workforce.
