In November 2023, EnCap returned to volunteer at the Brookwood Community located in West Houston. Volunteer work included sleeving some of Brookwood’s 40,000+ poinsettias in preparation for the holiday season. After the volunteer work was completed EnCap volunteers enjoyed lunch at the Brookwood café and shopped at the gift shop where profits are used to support the campus and citizens.
The Brookwood Community’s vision is to change the way the world thinks about adults with disabilities and to provide meaning and purpose for adults with disabilities (the “Citizens”). The Brookwood Community provides an educational environment that creates meaningful work, builds a sense of belonging, and awakens genuine purpose in the lives of adults with disabilities. The Citizens are the heart of Brookwood. Brookwood’s day program started in 1983, and the first residential Citizens joined in 1985. Today, more than 200 Citizens work in one or more of the enterprises at the main campus in Brookshire or one of the two satellite locations in Richmond, Texas and The Woodlands, Texas. Over 100 Residential Citizens live on the 485-acre campus and another 130 Day Citizens live at home and commute daily to work on campus. The Citizens enjoy genuine fellowship, participate in fitness activities, worship in the interfaith worship center, and when necessary, receive care in the onsite health clinic.
